COLUMBUS, Ga. — The Jeff Davis Yellow Jackets opened play in the GHSA Elite Eight with an impressive 7-1 victory over Berrien on Wednesday, October 28, behind a strong pitching performance from Briley Reagin and a four-RBI afternoon from Savanna Robinette.
The victory gives the Jackets a strong start in Columbus and sets up a Thursday (today) matchup against a familiar opponent, Bacon County, at 12:30 p.m.
Savanna Robinette continued her impressive postseason performance, collecting three hits and driving in four of Jeff Davis’ seven runs.
Robinette put the Jackets on the scoreboard in the third inning with an RBI single. She delivered again in the fifth, driving in two runs with a double, before adding another run-scoring single in the sixth. Her timely hitting helped Jeff Davis build a lead that Berrien was unable to overcome.
Abby Williams and Mattie Walsh also contributed multiple hits as the Jackets put together a balanced offensive effort.
Briley Reagin delivered a complete-game performance in the circle, holding Berrien to just one run on three hits over seven innings. Reagin struck out six batters while allowing only one walk, keeping the Berrien offense in check throughout the contest.
Berrien’s lone run came in the bottom of the sixth inning when McMillan connected on a solo home run to center field. McMillan finished 2-for-3 and accounted for Berrien’s only RBI.
The Jeff Davis defense also contributed to the win, turning a double play behind Reagin.
With the opening-round victory secured, Jeff Davis now turns its attention to Bacon County in Thursday’s 12:30 p.m. matchup. The game carries an added challenge for the Jackets, as Bacon County defeated Jeff Davis in both regular-season meetings.
However, postseason play presents a new opportunity, and the Jackets enter Thursday’s contest with momentum following their win over Berrien.
Jeff Davis has already demonstrated its ability to deliver in important moments during this playoff run, including its dramatic second-round sweep of Cook County that earned the team a trip to Columbus.
Wednesday’s victory was another strong all-around performance, combining timely hitting, steady defense, and a complete-game effort in the circle.
The Jackets will look to carry that momentum into Thursday’s matchup as they continue their pursuit of a state championship.
