Jackets fall 6–3 to Vidalia in Final Four; Ava Bohannon homers twice as Jeff Davis closes its season among Georgia’s best in Class AA.
COLUMBUS, Ga. — The Jeff Davis Yellow Jackets saw their 2026 softball season come to an end Saturday, October 31, following a 6–3 loss to Vidalia in the GHSA Class AA State Softball Tournament. While the Jackets fell one victory short of reaching the championship game, they finished the season with an impressive third-place finish in the state.
For a young Jeff Davis team featuring just two seniors, the accomplishment marked the conclusion of a season filled with challenges, growth, and determination.
Senior Ava Bohannon delivered a memorable performance in her final game wearing navy and gold, blasting two solo home runs to lead the Jackets’ offensive effort.
Vidalia took an early lead, scoring one run in the first inning and adding two more in the second to build a 3–0 advantage.
The Jackets battled back in the fourth inning with a pair of solo home runs. Bohannon sent a shot over the left-field fence, and Savanna Robinette followed with a home run to center field, cutting Vidalia’s lead to 4–2.
Bohannon wasn’t finished. In the bottom of the sixth inning, she connected for her second home run of the game, this time sending the ball over the right-field fence to bring Jeff Davis within striking distance.
Despite the three home runs, the Jackets were unable to overcome Vidalia’s early advantage, falling 6–3. Bohannon and Robinette each collected two hits to lead Jeff Davis offensively.
Briley Reagin started for the Jackets and worked five innings, allowing five runs, three earned, on eight hits. She struck out three batters and walked one.
Vidalia pitcher Polke earned the victory, allowing five hits and three runs over seven innings while striking out six. Vidalia finished with 12 hits, while Jeff Davis recorded five. The Jackets also turned a double play defensively.
The victory advanced Vidalia to the Class AA state championship game against Gordon Lee. Gordon Lee went on to defeat Vidalia 5–4, claiming the 2026 state championship.
Although Saturday’s loss ended the Jackets’ championship pursuit, their third-place finish tells a much bigger story.
Throughout the season, Jeff Davis faced difficult opponents, experienced setbacks, and continued developing as a team.
The Jackets entered the state tournament determined to compete, sweeping Oglethorpe County in the opening round and Cook County in the second round to earn a trip to Columbus.
Once there, Jeff Davis defeated Berrien 7–1 before securing an impressive 11–2 victory over Bacon County, a team that had defeated the Jackets twice during the regular season. That victory propelled Jeff Davis into the Final Four, where the Jackets competed against two of the state’s strongest programs.
For a roster with only two seniors, reaching the final three teams in Class AA is a significant achievement. The experience gained throughout the postseason provides a foundation for a young group that will return with valuable lessons from competing on one of Georgia high school softball’s biggest stages.
For Head Coach Brooke Wilcox, the team’s third-place finish represents far more than its final standing in the state tournament. Wilcox described what the young Jackets accomplished as remarkable, particularly considering the challenges they encountered throughout the season.
She acknowledged that the team experienced setbacks, humbling moments, and opportunities to make excuses. Instead, the players continued working, competing, and finding ways to win.
According to Wilcox, the expectations for the program never changed, and the team never backed away from those expectations. Rather than allowing adversity to define their season, the Jackets accepted each challenge and continued proving they could compete with the best programs in Georgia.
Their determination ultimately earned them a place among the final three teams standing in Class AA.
Wilcox expressed tremendous pride in her players and gratitude for the journey they shared throughout the season.
“I wouldn’t trade this group for anybody else’s,” Wilcox said.
Her reflections underscore what made this season special: a young team that continued growing through difficult moments, remained committed to its goals, and earned its place among the state’s best.
Saturday’s game also marked the end of the high school softball careers of seniors Ava Bohannon and Madison Joyce. Both have been important parts of the Jeff Davis program, contributing to the team’s success and helping lead a young roster through a demanding season.
Bohannon’s two-home-run performance in her final game provided a fitting example of her ability to make an impact when her team needed it.
While their time on the field as Yellow Jackets has come to an end, the contributions of Bohannon and Joyce will remain part of the program’s story.
Under Head Coach Brooke Wilcox, along with assistant coaches Kaleb Brown, Hunter Foster, and Jeff McGowan, the Yellow Jackets continued building a competitive program while developing a young roster. The journey wasn’t without obstacles, but the Jackets kept working, improving, and finding ways to compete.
Their reward was a trip to Columbus and a place among the final three teams in Class AA.
Only one team can finish a season holding the state championship trophy. For Jeff Davis, the 2026 season ends with something else worth celebrating: the progress of a young team, the leadership of its seniors, and the experience of competing deep into the state tournament.
As Coach Wilcox’s reflections make clear, the Jackets’ success was not simply measured by victories. It was also measured by how they responded when things became difficult, how they continued to meet expectations, and how they refused to back down from the challenges in front of them.
Congratulations to the Jeff Davis Yellow Jackets, coaches, and especially seniors Ava Bohannon and Madison Joyce on an outstanding season and a third-place finish in the state!
When you’re wearing navy, you’re as good as gold!
