The Jeff Davis Middle School cross country teams made it a clean sweep Thursday afternoon, with both the boys and girls bringing home first-place finishes from the Frazier-Hite Invitational in Statesboro.
The JD boys turned in a dominant team performance, finishing with 33 points and beating runner-up Richmond Hill by 38 points. Jeff Davis placed five scoring runners among the top 13 overall. Cason Roberson led the Jackets with a second-place finish, completing the two-mile course in 13:51.11. Abel Cabrera was right behind him in third at 13:53.78, giving Jeff Davis two individual medalists.
Rhett Wilkerson added a seventh-place finish in 14:50.58, followed by Yobani Cruz Santos in eighth at 15:04.92 and Derek Fitzwater in 13th at 15:36.46 to complete JD’s five scoring positions. Nathan Rayo finished 14th in 15:38.56, while Malaki Quinilla was 21st in 15:49.88.
The girls’ race was much tighter, but Jeff Davis put together the performance it needed to claim the team championship with 41 points, edging Southeast Bulloch by just two points and Richmond Hill by 10.
Dakota Mincey led JD with a third-place finish in 16:30.70, while Rayleigh Pierce followed in fourth at 16:34.90. Both earned individual medal honors. Valerie Porras gave Jeff Davis a third runner inside the top 10, finishing seventh in 16:46.90. Rounding out JD’s five scoring runners were Winry Clark, who placed 13th in 17:38.10, and Amy Miller, who finished 14th in 17:43.80. Zoe Odum placed 19th in 18:24.30, and Jasmine Reynolds finished 29th in 20:12.90.
The sweep continues a strong opening to the season for JDXC Middle School. At the Peach State Preview on Aug. 15, the boys also captured first place, while the girls finished third. Thursday’s performance moved the girls to the top of the standings as well and gave Jeff Davis two team championships in Statesboro. It was an impressive afternoon for JDXC, with four individual medalists and two first-place team finishes coming home to Jeff Davis County.
