Families in the Jeff Davis County School System can once again take one item off their back-to-school checklist this year: every enrolled student will receive free breakfast and free lunch, regardless of household income. The district is able to provide meals at no cost through the Community Eligibility Provision (CEP), a federal program that allows eligible school districts to serve free meals to all enrolled students without requiring families to complete free or reduced-price meal applications. For parents, the program means one less form to complete and one less expense to worry about as students return to the classroom.

Unlike traditional school meal programs, the Community Eligibility Provision eliminates the need for families to submit income verification or meal applications. Instead, every enrolled student has access to a free breakfast and lunch each school day, helping ensure that no child goes without a nutritious meal because of financial circumstances. Schools qualify for CEP based on the percentage of students who are directly certified for assistance through programs such as the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) or Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF).

Benefits Beyond the Cafeteria

Education and nutrition experts say programs like CEP benefit both students and schools in several ways. Because every student receives meals at no cost, the program removes any stigma associated with free or reduced-price lunches, creating a more inclusive environment where all students are treated equally. The program also reduces paperwork for school staff, allowing more time to focus on supporting students rather than processing meal applications.

Perhaps most importantly, research has shown that students who have consistent access to nutritious meals are better prepared to learn. Well-fed children are more likely to stay focused in class, participate in learning activities, and perform better academically.

Important Information for Families

While standard school breakfasts and lunches are provided at no cost, parents should be aware that à la carte items, second meals, snacks, and meals purchased by visitors or adults are not included and must be paid for separately. Families with questions about menus, dietary accommodations, or student meal accounts may contact the Jeff Davis County School Nutrition Department at 912-699-6010.

As another school year begins, the Community Eligibility Provision continues to help ensure that every Jeff Davis County student has access to healthy meals—supporting not only student wellness but also classroom success.
