As students prepare to return to the classroom, Jeff Davis Middle School is launching several new initiatives designed to strengthen academic achievement, increase student engagement, and equip students with the skills they need for success both in school and in life. Principal Dr. Brent Coleman says this year’s changes reflect the school’s continued commitment to meeting students where they are while preparing them for the future. Among the most significant updates are a new block schedule, increased teacher collaboration through data-driven planning, a greater emphasis on hands-on learning, and the addition of a Soft Skills and Life Skills course.
As the new school year begins, Dr. Coleman shared the following welcome message with students, parents, and the Jeff Davis community:
“Jeff Davis Middle School is excited to begin the new school year with several initiatives designed to better support students and prepare them for success both in school and beyond.
One of the biggest changes this year is the transition to a block schedule. Longer class periods provide our teachers with more time to deliver meaningful instruction, offer targeted support, and help students reach their goals, particularly in English Language Arts and Mathematics.
Our teachers are also working together in collaborative teams to regularly analyze student data, identify learning needs, and develop strategies to better serve every student. This team approach allows us to make informed instructional decisions and provide support where it is needed most.
In addition, JDMS is placing a greater emphasis on student engagement by reducing unnecessary technology use and creating more opportunities for discussion, hands-on learning, and meaningful interaction in the classroom.
We are also introducing a new Soft Skills and Life Skills course to help students develop communication, teamwork, responsibility, leadership, and other essential skills that will benefit them throughout high school and beyond.
At JDMS, we believe preparing students for the future means developing both strong academic skills and strong character. We look forward to partnering with our families and community as we work together to make this a successful year for every student.”
As the first day of school approaches, Dr. Coleman and the faculty at Jeff Davis Middle School are looking forward to welcoming students back for another year of learning, growth, and achievement. Through innovative instructional practices, strong partnerships with families, and a continued focus on developing both academic excellence and character, the school is preparing students for success today and in the future. Parents and students are invited to Open House, Thursday, August 6, from 2 pm until 5 pm.
