HAZLEHURST, GA — Hundreds of local families will have an opportunity to receive food assistance Thursday as the Second Harvest Mobile Food Pantry returns to Hazlehurst. The mobile pantry will be held Thursday, August 13, at the Hazlehurst Church of God, 77 South Cromartie Street, with distribution expected to begin around 9:30 a.m. and continue until approximately 11:30 a.m., or until the available food supply is exhausted. Organizers say a Second Harvest semi-truck is expected to arrive prepared to provide food for approximately 300 families. Distribution is first come, first served.
The Mobile Food Pantry program was established in 2007 to help provide hunger relief in rural communities where access to food pantries and other feeding programs may be limited. Trucks transport approximately 12,000 pounds of food to centrally located partner organizations, where it is distributed directly to families and individuals. The program focuses on providing emergency food assistance while increasing access to fresh foods and balanced nutrition. Items available through mobile distributions generally include produce, poultry, canned goods and other foods with a longer shelf life, although specific items may vary. In 2025, Second Harvest reported reaching 36,750 households through 84 Mobile Food Pantry events across the 21 counties it serves.
Important Instructions for Thursday
Because of the expected heat and humidity, organizers hope to move vehicles through the distribution area as quickly as possible. Those attending are asked to have a cleared space in their vehicle ready for volunteers to load food. Anyone wanting food placed in the trunk should have the trunk open before reaching volunteers collecting forms.
Required portions of distribution forms must be completely filled out before reaching the volunteers collecting them. Organizers say vehicles with incomplete forms will be directed to the back of the line.
Food distribution will be limited to one box per household, and individuals may pick up only for their own household. Each household receiving assistance must have a representative present in the vehicle, and no more than three households may be represented in a single vehicle.
Those attending are also asked not to have lit cigarettes or active vaping devices when approaching volunteers.
The 9:30 a.m. starting time is approximate because the Second Harvest truck will be traveling from Savannah, and unforeseen travel delays could affect its arrival. See the map showing the drive-through route at the church.
