TATTNALL COUNTY, Ga. — Tattnall County High School is searching for new leadership for its football program after head coach Pat Collins resigned following an incident during a team practice last week. The Tattnall County Board of Education confirmed Collins’ resignation Sunday, bringing a quick end to a series of events that began during football practice Monday, Aug. 31. While the district has acknowledged that an incident occurred, officials have not publicly disclosed details about what happened.
According to information released by the school district, school and district administrators became aware of the practice incident on Tuesday morning. An investigation was immediately initiated, and Collins was placed on indefinite suspension within hours, according to the district.
On Wednesday, Collins was given an opportunity to address the football team and offered a formal apology to the players. Two days later, on Friday morning, Collins submitted his resignation as head football coach. The district said Collins made the decision to step away and take responsibility for the circumstances surrounding the incident and the effect it had on the school community.

Tattnall County’s football staff includes assistant head coach and offensive coordinator Rick Winbigler, who has previous head-coaching experience. However, the district has not announced that Winbigler — or anyone else — has been appointed interim head coach.
