UPDATE — Friday Evening, Sept. 18:
The statewide lockdown has been lifted at most Georgia Department of Corrections facilities following Thursday’s gang-related fight at Telfair State Prison. However, Telfair State Prison remains on lockdown, along with Calhoun State Prison and specific dorms at Hancock and Wilcox state prisons. GDC has not announced when those remaining restrictions will be lifted.
Three inmates were injured Thursday during a gang-related fight at Telfair State Prison, according to the Georgia Department of Corrections. GDC told WGXA that numerous offenders were involved in the altercation, but the incident was contained to one dorm within the prison.
Three inmates were transported to area hospitals for treatment. Their injuries were reported as non-life-threatening. The incident comes amid heightened concerns over violence within Georgia’s prison system and while state correctional facilities remain under increased security restrictions following recent gang-related disturbances at multiple prisons.
No deaths have been reported in connection with Thursday’s incident at Telfair State Prison The statewide lockdown involving Georgia Department of Corrections facilities also appears to remain in place. As of Friday afternoon, Sept. 18, Hazlehurst Now has not received or located an update from GDC indicating that the statewide lockdown has been lifted.
