Eight teams remain. One state championship is up for grabs. And the Jeff Davis Yellow Jackets are headed to Columbus with an opportunity to compete for the ultimate prize in Georgia high school softball.
The Jackets will open the GHSA Class AA State Fast Pitch Softball Tournament on Wednesday, October 28, against the Berrien Rebels at 1:15 p.m. at the Columbus Softball Complex.
For a Jeff Davis team featuring just two seniors and a roster filled with young talent, reaching the Elite Eight is an accomplishment worth celebrating. But the Jackets aren’t finished yet.
Jeff Davis punched its ticket to Columbus on October 19 with a thrilling two-game sweep of Cook County in the Sweet 16.
The Jackets captured the opener 6–5 before winning Game 2 in unforgettable fashion, 10–7.
In the first game, senior Ava Bohannon delivered a clutch seventh-inning home run to lift Jeff Davis to victory.
The second game provided even more drama.
With two outs, two strikes, and the score tied 7–7 in the bottom of the seventh inning, Savanna Robinette stepped to the plate with two runners aboard. One swing changed everything.
Robinette launched a three-run walk-off home run over the left-field fence, securing the series sweep and sending the Jackets into the Elite Eight.
The two victories demonstrated the resilience of a Jeff Davis team that refused to give up, even when facing late-inning deficits.
The Jackets will face a Berrien team they know well. The two programs met twice during the regular season, splitting their matchups.
Berrien claimed a narrow 3–2 victory on August 25, but Jeff Davis responded with a 5–0 shutout on September 16. That history adds another layer of excitement to Wednesday’s matchup.
Berrien earned its place in Columbus by sweeping East Laurens in the Sweet 16, winning 9–1 and 10–1. Both teams enter the tournament knowing they are capable of defeating the other, setting the stage for an intriguing opening-round contest.
Under head coach Brooke Wilcox, the Yellow Jackets have continued to develop throughout the season.
“These girls believed they could win when plenty of people didn’t. They’ve dealt with a ton of adversity, competed like crazy, and refused to quit,” Wilcox told Hazlehurst Now. “If they will keep playing with that same grit, we’ll give ourselves a chance. That’s all I can ask for. I don’t want them satisfied with just being in the Elite 8. I want us to be the toughest team to put away in that tournament.”
With seniors Ava Bohannon and Madison Joyce providing leadership, a young roster has gained valuable experience through a challenging regular-season schedule and postseason competition.
The team’s run to Columbus has featured timely hitting, important defensive plays, and contributions from players throughout the lineup. The Jackets’ dramatic victories over Cook County showed just how far the team has come and what it can accomplish when the pressure is on.
The Class AA tournament features eight remaining teams competing in a double-elimination format.
Wednesday’s opening-round matchups include:
- Jeff Davis vs. Berrien
- Metter vs. Banks County
- Vidalia vs. Bacon County
- Gordon Lee vs. Mount Zion
All four opening games are scheduled for Wednesday, October 28.
Teams will continue advancing through the winners’ and elimination brackets as they compete for a spot in the state championship.
For the Jeff Davis Yellow Jackets, the journey to Columbus represents months of practices, games, challenges, and growth. It also represents an opportunity.
An opportunity for two seniors to finish their high school careers on one of Georgia softball’s biggest stages. An opportunity for younger players to gain championship-level experience. And an opportunity for the entire team to accomplish something special together.
Whatever happens in Columbus, the Jackets have already given their community plenty of reasons to be proud.
But with the state championship still within reach, there’s more softball to be played.
When you’re wearing navy, you’re as good as gold!
GO JACKETS!
