Some victories are exciting. Some are unforgettable. And then there are afternoons like Monday, October 19, when the Jeff Davis Yellow Jackets delivered two thrilling comeback victories over Cook County to punch their ticket to the GHSA State Softball Elite Eight in Columbus!
In a best-of-three playoff series that featured dramatic home runs, clutch hitting, and plenty of late-inning suspense, the Jackets rallied to win Game 1, 6-5, before delivering an incredible finish in Game 2, winning 10-7 on a walk-off home run by Savanna Robinette.
And what a way to end a series.
With two outs, two strikes, and the game tied in the bottom of the seventh inning, Robinette launched a three-run home run over the left-field fence, sending the Jackets into celebration and securing their place among the final eight teams in the state.
But before that unforgettable moment, the Jackets had already shown they weren’t going down without a fight.
Game 1: Bohannon’s Seventh-Inning Blast Lifts Jackets to 6-5 Victory
The opening game of the series was a back-and-forth battle, with Jeff Davis needing a late comeback to take the first victory.
Cook struck first in the bottom of the opening inning on an RBI single by Jones.
Jeff Davis eventually moved ahead 3-2 in the top of the fifth inning. A Cook defensive error brought home one run before senior Ava Bohannon delivered a two-run double to give the Jackets the lead.
But Cook answered in the bottom half of the inning.
Morris connected on a three-run home run to right field, putting Cook back in front, 5-3.
With the Jackets trailing by two, Briley Reagin provided a spark in the top of the sixth, sending a solo home run over the left-field fence to cut the deficit to 5-4.
That set the stage for another dramatic moment.
With Jeff Davis trailing by one in the top of the seventh inning, Bohannon stepped to the plate and delivered when her team needed her most.
The senior blasted a two-run home run to left field, turning a 5-4 deficit into a 6-5 Jeff Davis lead.
The Jackets held on in the bottom of the seventh to secure the opening-game victory.
Bohannon finished with three hits and four RBIs, including the fifth-inning double and game-winning home run.
Reagin added two hits, including her sixth-inning solo homer.
In the circle, Anna Grace Alligood turned in a determined complete-game performance, pitching all seven innings while allowing six hits and five runs, four earned. She struck out an impressive 11 batters and walked five.
Defensively, Jeff Davis played an error-free game, with Robinette recording a team-high 11 fielding chances.
The 6-5 victory gave the Jackets a one-game advantage in the series, but the excitement was far from over.
Game 2: Robinette’s Walk-Off Home Run Sends Jackets to Columbus
If the first game was dramatic, the second was something special.
Jeff Davis opened the scoring in the bottom of the first inning when Bohannon launched a solo home run to center field, giving the Jackets an early 1-0 advantage.
Cook answered in the second inning on an RBI double by Flowers to tie the game.
In the top of the third, Cook moved ahead 3-1 on a fielder’s choice by Morris.
But the Jackets responded in the bottom half of the inning, scoring twice on sacrifice flies, including one by Alligood, to tie the game at 3-3.
Cook regained control in the fifth inning when Griffis hit a two-run home run to center field. A groundout by Byrd brought home another run, extending Cook’s lead to 6-3.
Once again, the Jackets faced a three-run deficit.
And once again, they answered.
In the bottom of the sixth inning, Jeff Davis put together a four-run rally, highlighted by singles from Abby Williams, Savanna Robinette, and Alligood.
By the time the inning ended, the Jackets had turned a 6-3 deficit into a 7-6 lead.
Only three outs separated Jeff Davis from Columbus.
But Cook wasn’t finished.
In the top of the seventh inning, Griffis delivered her second home run of the game, a solo shot to center field that tied the score at 7-7.
The stage was set for a finish that Jacket fans won’t soon forget.
Two Outs. Two Strikes. One Unforgettable Swing.
With the score tied 7-7 in the bottom of the seventh inning, the Jackets were down to their final out of regulation.
Robinette came to the plate with two runners aboard.
The count reached two strikes.
And then came the swing.
Robinette drove the ball over the left-field fence for a three-run walk-off home run, giving Jeff Davis a 10-7 victory and sending the Jackets to the Elite Eight!
It was the kind of moment that makes postseason softball so special — one swing, one eruption of excitement, and a celebration years of hard work had helped make possible.
Robinette finished Game 2 3-for-4 with four RBIs, including the three-run blast that ended the series.
Williams also collected three hits, while Reagin added two as the Jackets finished with 12 hits.
Bohannon’s first-inning home run gave her another long ball on the day, adding to an already impressive postseason performance.
In the circle, Reagin started Game 2, allowing three runs, one earned, on four hits over four innings. She struck out two and walked two.
Alligood entered in relief and earned the victory, working three innings while allowing four runs, two earned, on four hits. She struck out three without issuing a walk.
The Jackets also turned a double play defensively.
A Day of Big Moments and Bigger Determination
Across the two games, Jeff Davis totaled 16 runs and 19 hits, but the numbers tell only part of the story.
The Jackets trailed late in both contests and found ways to come back.
In Game 1, Bohannon’s seventh-inning home run turned a one-run deficit into a victory.
In Game 2, Jeff Davis erased a three-run deficit in the sixth inning, only to see Cook tie the game in the seventh. Then Robinette delivered the swing that ended the series.
Alligood earned both pitching victories, Bohannon drove in four runs in the opener and homered again in Game 2, and Robinette finished the day with a moment that will be remembered long after the season ends.
It was a complete team effort, with clutch contributions throughout the lineup.
