As students and teachers prepare to return to the classroom, Jeff Davis County Schools is entering the 2026-27 school year with optimism, strong academic momentum, and an unwavering commitment to student success. According to Superintendent Dr. Chris Roppe, the district continues to build upon the academic gains made over the past two years. Like school systems across the nation, Jeff Davis County experienced learning setbacks during the COVID-19 pandemic. Since then, educators have worked diligently to help students regain lost ground, and the results have been encouraging.
District leaders report that student achievement has shown steady improvement during the 2024 and 2025 school years, and preliminary assessment data indicates that this positive trend is continuing into the 2026 school year. While there is still work to be done, the district is encouraged by the progress students have made and remains committed to providing every child with the highest quality education possible.
As families prepare for the first day of school, Dr. Roppe shared the following welcome message:
“A new school year always brings renewed excitement, fresh opportunities, and endless possibilities. Whether your child is entering school for the first time, beginning their senior year, or somewhere in between, we are honored that you have entrusted Jeff Davis County Schools with their education.
This year is especially exciting as we prepare to welcome students into the new Jeff Davis Primary School. This outstanding facility will provide an exceptional learning environment for our youngest students and, for the first time, will house our Pre-K program alongside our primary students. Bringing these students together will create a smoother transition into kindergarten and strengthen the foundation for future success.
While we are excited about new facilities, our greatest investment will always be in our students. Throughout the summer, we continued to strengthen our safety measures while our school and district leadership teams carefully reviewed last year’s academic progress to identify opportunities for continued growth. Our commitment remains simple: to provide every student with the safest possible learning environment and the highest quality education.
The true strength of Jeff Davis County Schools, however, is not found in our buildings—it’s found in our people. Every day, our teachers, support staff, administrators, bus drivers, cafeteria workers, custodians, maintenance workers, and many others invest in the lives of our students. Their dedication, along with the unwavering support of our families and community, is what makes our school system so special.
As we begin another school year, our vision remains unchanged: a relentless pursuit of excellence as we prepare students for life. Whether we are helping a Pre-K student take those first steps into school or preparing a senior for the opportunities that lie ahead, our goal is the same—to ensure every student is ready for tomorrow.
Thank you for the trust you place in us each day. It is an honor to serve the students and families of Jeff Davis County, and I look forward to another outstanding year.
And as always… GO JACKETS!
Sincerely,
Dr. Chris Roppe
Superintendent
As another school year begins, district leaders say the focus extends beyond academics alone. Continued improvements in school safety, investment in teachers and staff, strong family partnerships, and preparing students for life after graduation remain at the heart of the district’s mission. With a new primary school opening, encouraging academic growth, and a community committed to supporting its students, Jeff Davis County Schools is looking forward to another year of learning, achievement, and opportunity.
As classrooms fill with students once again, district leaders remain focused on a single mission: providing every child with the knowledge, skills, and opportunities they need to succeed—not only during their years in Jeff Davis County Schools, but throughout their lives. As Dr. Roppe reminds the community, the district’s vision remains “a relentless pursuit of excellence as we prepare students for life.” That vision, combined with the support of families and the community, continues to guide Jeff Davis County Schools toward an even brighter future.
