The Jeff Davis Yellow Jackets played a pair of close games to begin the week, falling 4-2 at East Laurens on Monday before returning home Tuesday and rallying for a 3-2 victory over Emanuel County Institute. The two contests featured strong pitching performances from Jeff Davis, while Tuesday’s win was highlighted by a three-run sixth-inning rally that helped the Yellow Jackets improve to 2-1 on the young season.
Jeff Davis Out hits East Laurens in 4-2 Loss
Jeff Davis collected nine hits to East Laurens’ three Monday but was unable to turn enough of those opportunities into runs.
The Jackets struck first when Briley Reagin delivered a two-strike single in the opening inning to bring home a run and give Jeff Davis an early advantage. Jeff Davis held the lead until the bottom of the fifth, when East Laurens used a base hit and a defensive error to even the game.
East Laurens moved ahead in the sixth on a single down the right-field line and later added another run on a passed ball, building the lead it would hold for the 4-2 victory.
Despite taking the loss, Anna Grace Alligood turned in a strong outing in the circle. She pitched all six innings, allowing only three hits and four runs, two earned, while striking out nine and walking two.
Abby Williams led the Jeff Davis offense with three hits, while Reagin finished 1-for-4 and drove in both Lady Jacket runs.
Sixth-Inning Rally Pushes Jeff Davis Past ECI
Less than 24 hours later, the Lady Jackets returned to the field for their home opener against ECI, and this time Jeff Davis found the late-inning rally it needed. ECI took an early lead in the first inning, but Jeff Davis pitching kept the game within reach throughout the night.
Briley Reagin started in the circle and worked five innings, allowing just one run on two hits while issuing only one walk.
The Yellow Jackets made some adjustments at the plate in the bottom of the sixth. Ava Bohannon got things going by leading off the inning with a triple. Madison Joyce then singled to center field to drive in Bohannon, and Savanna Robinette followed with a double to center to bring home another. Jeff Davis added a third run on a passed ball, completing a three-run inning and taking the lead.
Anna Grace Alligood handled the final two innings, allowing one run on three hits while striking out two to earn the 3-2 victory. At the plate, Ava Bohannon led Jeff Davis with a 2-for-3 performance from the leadoff position. Joyce and Robinette each recorded an RBI. The Yellow Jackets also turned a double play defensively in both games.
After opening the season with a 16-1 victory over Wilcox County, Jeff Davis has now played three games in seven days, with Tuesday’s comeback moving the Lady Jackets to 2-1. The early stretch has already featured several strong pitching performances and a young Jeff Davis team finding ways to compete in tight games.
Jeff Davis returns to the road Thursday, traveling to Effingham County for its next matchup.
