The Jeff Davis High School softball team opened region play this week with a pair of tough losses, falling 2-0 to Bacon County on Tuesday before battling back from an early deficit in a 6-4 loss to Thomasville on Thursday. Despite the two losses, the Yellow Jackets received strong pitching from Anna Grace Alligood in both contests and showed some fight at the plate Thursday, nearly overcoming a five-run deficit against Thomasville.
Bacon County 2, Jeff Davis 0
Tuesday’s region opener was a pitchers’ duel, with Bacon County managing just enough offense to take the 2-0 victory. Bacon County scored one run in the first inning and added another in the second to build the early lead. From there, neither team was able to push another run across.
Alligood went all six innings in the circle for Jeff Davis, allowing two runs on seven hits while striking out six. Offense was difficult to come by for the Yellow Jackets against Bacon County pitcher Villasenor, who held Jeff Davis to one hit over seven innings. Savanna Robinette recorded the Jackets’ lone hit.
Thomasville 6, Jeff Davis 4
Jeff Davis returned home Thursday and found itself in a much different kind of game. The Yellow Jackets struck first when a sacrifice bunt by Madison Joyce helped bring home a run in the bottom of the first inning. Thomasville tied the game in the second before putting together a five-run third inning to take a 6-1 lead. A three-run triple by Oehlhof delivered the biggest blow of the inning.
But Jeff Davis didn’t go away. The Yellow Jackets began chipping away at the deficit and eventually pulled within two runs. Jeff Davis finished the night with 10 hits, but the comeback came up just short in the 6-4 loss. Alligood led the offense with three hits in four at-bats, while Briley Reagin, Gabby Taylor and Ava Bohannon each drove in a run. Alligood also pitched all seven innings, striking out 11 while allowing six runs, five earned, on 11 hits with just one walk.
The Yellow Jackets will look to bounce back Saturday when they travel to Cordele to take on Jones County at 11:30 and Centennial at 1:30. Go Jackets!
