There’s something different about tennis season at Jeff Davis Middle School this year — it’s happening in the fall.
JDMS tennis has traditionally been a spring sport, but a change in conferences moved the middle school season to the fall. Under the direction of Coaches Katie Kersey and Cam Lewis, the Jackets opened their new-look season with an impressive performance against Wayne County, with both the girls and boys picking up team victories.
The JDMS girls swept Wayne County 5-0, while the boys battled their way to a 3-2 victory.
Girls Results
- No. 1 Singles: Jolie Kersey won, 8-3
- No. 2 Singles: Emmy Saunders won, 8-1
- No. 3 Singles: Madelyn Maybin won, 8-0
- No. 1 Doubles: Tera Thigpen/Lola Fisher won, 8-2
- No. 2 Doubles: Hadley Wigley/Kinsley Waters won, 8-0
The boys’ match came down to a much tighter finish, with Jeff Davis pulling out a 3-2 team victory.
Boys Results
- No. 2 Singles: Zach Jarrell won, 8-1
- No. 3 Singles: Braxton Bridges won a thriller in a tiebreaker, 9-8
- No. 2 Doubles: Lincoln Halsel/Maverick Kersey won, 8-1
Bridges’ tiebreaker victory proved especially important as the Jackets secured the narrow 3-2 team win.
It was a successful start to a new era for JDMS tennis — a 5-0 girls victory and 3-2 boys victory to open the fall season. The Jackets will be back on the court Thursday, (today), when they travel to Statesboro to face William James Middle School.
