The Jeff Davis Yellow Jackets are moving on in the GHSA State Softball Playoffs and are one of sixteen teams left. They swept Oglethorpe County in a best-of-three first-round series Tuesday, October 13th, in Hazlehurst.
The Jackets opened the doubleheader with a commanding 10-1 victory before closing out the series with a 12-4 win in Game 2, securing their place in the next round without needing a third game.
Jeff Davis combined for 22 runs and 23 hits across the two games, with strong performances at the plate and in the circle helping the Jackets advance.
Game 1: Bohannon Powers Jackets to 10-1 Victory
Senior Ava Bohannon delivered an outstanding performance in the series opener, blasting two home runs and driving in six runs to lead Jeff Davis to a 10-1 win.
Oglethorpe County struck first in the top of the opening inning when Weaver delivered an RBI single, but the Jackets wasted little time responding. Jeff Davis erupted for eight runs in the bottom of the first inning, quickly taking control of the game.
Madison Joyce delivered a two-run double, Gabby Taylor added an RBI single, and Anna Grace Alligood brought home another run with a sacrifice fly.
Bohannon then delivered the biggest hit of the inning, launching a grand slam over the left-field fence to give the Jackets an 8-1 advantage. The senior wasn’t finished. In the bottom of the third inning, Bohannon connected on her second home run of the game, a two-run shot to left field that extended the Jackets’ lead to 10-1. Bohannon finished with two hits, both home runs, and six RBIs.
Abby Williams and Briley Reagin also collected two hits apiece for Jeff Davis.
Reagin earned the pitching victory, working all five innings while allowing just three hits and one run. She struck out two batters and walked one, keeping the Oglethorpe County offense in check after the opening inning.
The Jackets finished with 11 hits in the victory.
Game 2: Taylor Drives in Four as Jackets Complete the Sweep, 12-4
With one victory already secured, Jeff Davis returned to the field determined to finish the series. The Jackets took the lead in the second inning when Gabby Taylor delivered an RBI single, putting Jeff Davis ahead 1-0.
In the third inning, Savanna Robinette doubled home another run, extending the advantage to 2-0. Jeff Davis continued to build its lead, eventually pulling away for a 12-4 victory to complete the two-game sweep.
Taylor led the offensive effort, going 3-for-4 with four RBIs. Abby Williams and Robinette also recorded multiple hits as the Jackets collected 12 hits in the second game.
Bohannon contributed in a different way at the plate, drawing four walks. As a team, Jeff Davis showed patience, earning eight walks throughout the contest.
Reagin picked up her second pitching victory of the day, allowing four runs, three earned, on four hits over four innings. She struck out two and walked three. Taylor and Alligood also contributed in the circle, each pitching a scoreless inning in relief.
Defensively, the Jackets turned a double play to help limit Oglethorpe County’s scoring opportunities. For Oglethorpe County, Jones and Eidson each recorded two hits, with Eidson driving in two runs.
Tuesday’s sweep was highlighted by Bohannon’s two-home-run performance in the opener, Taylor’s four-RBI effort in Game 2, and Reagin earning both pitching victories.
The Jackets also demonstrated their offensive depth, with several players contributing key hits and runs throughout the doubleheader.
With the first-round series behind them, Jeff Davis advances to the next round of the GHSA State Softball Playoffs, keeping its postseason run alive. They will travel to Cook County on Monday for another best of three series.
Good luck to our Yellow Jackets! When you’re wearing navy, you’re as good as gold!
