The event begins at 6:00 p.m. at the Jeff Davis Multipurpose Building, located next to the football field, and promises an evening of fellowship, recognition, and celebration for players, alumni, families, supporters, and community members. Residents who need help with federal tax questions or IRS account issues will have an opportunity to receive free, in-person assistance when the Internal Revenue Service hosts a temporary Community Assistance Visit in Hazlehurst later this month. The event will take place Tuesday, July 28, through Thursday, July 30, at the Hazlehurst Public Library, located at 189 East Jarman Street. The Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) is investigating an officer-involved shooting that occurred in Appling County after a vehicle pursuit that began in Hazlehurst and involved local, county, and state law enforcement officers. According to a GBI news release issued Wednesday, Terrick Barice Griggs, 37, of Savannah, was shot and injured during the incident. No law enforcement officers were injured. The GBI said the incident began on Tuesday, July 21, when a Hazlehurst Police Department officer and a Jeff Davis County Sheriff’s Office deputy attempted to stop a vehicle traveling on U.S. Highway 341. A familiar face from Jeff Davis County is stepping into one of the top leadership roles in technical education. Teresa Coleman, a Hazlehurst native and Jeff Davis High School graduate, has been appointed interim president of Southeastern Technical College following the retirement of longtime President Larry Calhoun. Coleman brings more than three decades of experience in technical education and has spent the past 30 years serving Southeastern Technical College in a variety of leadership positions. The Jeff Davis County Joint Development Authority (JDA) held a called meeting Tuesday, with the primary agenda item centered on approving a permanent easement agreement with the City of Hazlehurst for a proposed lift station beside the Bassford Warehouse property on Hatton Still Road. Representatives explained that the agreement grants the city a permanent easement for the installation and maintenance of the lift station while allowing the Joint Development Authority to retain ownership of the property. A Hazlehurst native is inviting the community to experience his latest collection of artwork during a month-long exhibition at the Okefenokee Heritage Center in Waycross. Artist Don Yaun, who was born and raised in Hazlehurst, will present “A Sense of Place,” an exhibition featuring 50 paintings created over the past six years. The exhibit opens Sunday, August 2, and will remain on display through August 30, 2026.
