The Jeff Davis Yellow Jackets held a one-run lead heading into the sixth inning Saturday, but a late Jones County rally proved to be the difference as the Jackets fell 6-3 in the first of two games played that day.Jeff Davis faced Jones County before taking on Centennial later Saturday, a game the Yellow Jackets went on to win 12-2.
Jones County struck first in the second inning when Maki singled home a run, but Jeff Davis worked its way back into the game. The Jackets tied the score at 1-1 in the bottom of the fourth when Kenley Pearson drew a walk that brought home a run. Jeff Davis then moved in front in the fifth. Savanna Robinette put the ball in play for an RBI groundout, giving the Jackets a 2-1 advantage. The lead changed hands in the sixth as Jones County used RBI singles from Maki and Sargent to move ahead 4-2. Jones County added to its lead before closing out the 6-3 victory.
Anna Grace Alligood went the distance in the circle for Jeff Davis, allowing six runs — four earned — on 10 hits over seven innings. She struck out nine and walked two. Jeff Davis collected seven hits, with Abby Williams, Briley Reagin, Kenley Pearson, Madison Joyce, Gabby Taylor, Ava Bohannon and Alligood each recording one. The Jackets also showed patience at the plate, drawing five walks. Bohannon led the team with two.
Jones County finished with 10 hits, led by Maki, who went 3-for-4 and drove in three runs. Despite the loss, Jeff Davis bounced back later Saturday with a 12-2 victory over Centennial, splitting its two games on the day.
Jeff Davis was scheduled to return to region play Tuesday against Berrien County, but bad weather forced the game to be postponed. The game has been rescheduled for Wednesday, August 26, at 4:30 p.m.
